Juntendo was originally founded in 1838 as a Dutch School of Medicine, so-called “Wadajuku” at a time when Western medical education was not yet embedded as a normal part of Japanese society. At the end of the Edo period, Wadajuku moved from the Edo to the Sakura borough in Chiba and changed the school’s name to JUNTENDO. In the beginning of the Meiji period, Juntendo moved again to Tokyo (around Yushima and Hongo) and founded the first private hospital in Japan, called Juntendo Hospital. The Juntendo Group now comprises 6 hospitals: Juntendo hospital (Tokyo), Shizuoka hospital (Shizuoka), Urayasu hospital (Chiba), Koshigaya hospital (Saitama), the Kotoh Geriatric Medical Center (Tokyo), and Nerima hospital (Tokyo).

The principle of Juntendo has been “Continuous advancement- Hudanzensin-不断前進”. Juntendo's mission also lies in the spirit of “JIN-仁”. The ideal of medicine is based on the spirit of Jin, which means, “I exist as you exist with a heart that is considerate and cherishes others.” It is often said that only through one's devotion to people and the world can one live and others prosper. This tradition and belief have been carried on through the ages to this day.

Juntendo University Nerima Hospital opened in 2005 at the request of Nerima Borough officials due to the lack of hospital beds. According to the Nerima city office report (11th of January, 2002), the reason why Nerima borough chose Juntendo was because of its high quality medical care, affluent experiences of pediatric care and emergency medical treatments, management, funding, and expectation of advanced medical care.

Before Juntendo University Nerima hospital opened, Nerima borough had markedly less beds and hospitals than other boroughs. Seventy percent of people who needed to be hospitalized were admitted outside of Nerima borough hospitals, while 50% of those needed emergency treatments were transported out of the borough. Findings a solution to this problem was of utmost importance to the people in Nerima borough. Juntendo University Nerima hospital opened in 2005 as the 6th hospital of the Juntendo Group and fully opened in 2006 with 400 beds.

Under its principle and motto, in combination with the requests of Nerima borough, Juntendo University Nerima hospital has played significant roles as the core hospital providing medical services in the local community.
